LeavesWith the economy in the shape it is, everyone is trying to cut back and save money in every way they can.  You can even save money in your yard and garden by using compost and mulch.  People spend untold dollars buying pine straw and other types of mulch and compost.  This is definitely an expense that can be eliminated with just a little time and effort.

You can make you own compost at home.  How to make your own compost?

If you live in the city and have a small yard and do not have enough leaves and things to make your own, check with you neighbors they will probably give you theirs.  You may find some bagged up ready for pick up that you can rescue from a trip to the landfill.

By using organic mulch in the garden you will cut down on weeds and your water use in the garden.  In some cities they compost the yard wastes from the community and allow you free access to it to use in your yard.  Check and see if your city provides this service.

A 2 to 3 inch layer of mulch spread around your plants will help to keep weeds from sprouting and help to conserve the moisture in the soil.  As the mulch decomposes it enriches the soil with nutrients.

So please, recycle your leaves, pine straw and yard clippings, it will save you money, prevent weeds from sprouting, cut down on water use in the garden, and keep something you can use out of the landfill.

For those what want to speed up the process here are some links to helpful products.

The use of fossil fuel such as oil and coal has adverse consequences. Not only are such resources finite in nature making them unsustainable, but their use has also been one of the primary reasons for environmental degradation. It is because of the extraction process and the emissions from the use of fossil fuel that many animals are now on the verge of extinction with numerous other species fast approaching the same status.
