What is Green Living?

Green living means different things to different people.  Most agree it’s attempting to live in a eco-friendly and a environmentally responsible way while attempting to reduce the size of your ecological or carbon footprint.

Green Living touches on many topics including:

·         Conservation is the management of our resources of which there are two types.

o   Renewable resources such as; forests, water, farmland and grazing land.

o   Nonrenewable resources such as; coal, natural gas and oil.

·         Recycling is the current raw material in products to make new products. This can be done using less energy than starting from scratch. Some products which can be recycled are:

          o   Aluminum cans

          o   Glass bottles

          o   Paper

          o   Plastic

          o   Steel/tin cans

·         Sustainability is each of us doing our part—economically, environmentally and socially—to keep the world the way it is or better for our children and grandchildren.

·         Green Construction is an opening to use our resources proficiently while creating healthier buildings that advance human health, build a improved environment, and provide cost savings.

·         Alternative Energy refers to any source of usable energy intended to supplement or replace conventional energy sources such as fossil fuels such as:

o   Hydroelectric power which is produced when water is run through turbines in a dam.

o   Nuclear power which is produced through the process of fission.

o   Solar power which is produced from the sun’s heat.

o   Wind power which is produced when the wind turns the blades of a turbine.

o   Geothermal energy is obtained from the internal heat of the planet and can be used to generate steam to run a steam turbine.

·         Organic Food Choices are produced according to certain production standards, meaning they are grown without the use of conventional pesticides and artificial fertilizers.

This touches on what green living means, but keep in mind more ways are being discovered daily which can apply to green living. Lets try to keep up and implement ways to help save our world.

The use of fossil fuel such as oil and coal has adverse consequences. Not only are such resources finite in nature making them unsustainable, but their use has also been one of the primary reasons for environmental degradation. It is because of the extraction process and the emissions from the use of fossil fuel that many animals are now on the verge of extinction with numerous other species fast approaching the same status.
